Global species extinction and human well-being

Heather M. Tallis and Peter Kareiva advocate a shift in emphasis from global to local approaches in dealing with the problems of biodiversity loss.
Predictions at this scale would be more useful because ecosystem services and human well-being are not functions of the global species count, but rather respond to populations and their role in transferring energy and nutrients locally.
